Steve Davis OBE

Steve Davis OBE is a former professional snooker player, commentator, DJ, musician, and author.

Most known for his impressive snooker career, Steve Davis has more recently hit headlines for being a DJ at Wembley Stadium to crowds of 90,000 people playing between performances by Blur and Paul Weller.

During the 1980s, Steve Davis dominated the snooker scene, reaching eight World Snooker Championship finals in nine years, winning six world titles, and holding the world number one ranking for seven consecutive seasons.

One of his stand-out achievements was in the 1987–88 season, when he became the first player to win all three Triple Crown events in a single season, a feat only two other players have subsequently achieved.

To this day, Steve Davis still holds the record for most professional titles overall, with 84 individual wins.

In 1988 he was named the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year, the first and only time a snooker player has received the award.

Since his retirement in 2016, after 38 seasons on the professional circuit, Steve has become a regular commentator and analyst for BBC’s snooker coverage.

Steve Davis was part of one of snooker’s most famous matches, the 1985 World Championship final, which came down to a dramatic black-ball finale.

The match attracted 18.5 million viewers, which is still the biggest British television audience for a broadcast after midnight and for any broadcast on BBC Two.

Steve was ranked number 1 in the world from the 1983/4 season to 1989/90, after which he was ranked number 2 for the following two years.

Continuing to play into his 50s, Steve remained ranked in the top 15 up to 2008, and was still playing competitively until 2016.

He was made an MBE in the 1988 Birthday Honours and an OBE in the 2000 New Year Honours for services to snooker.

Steve Davis and Music

Steve Davis was always a fan of rock music but it was as his playing career was coming to an end that music became more than just a pass time.

He joined Phoenix FM in 1996, broadcasting a mixture of soul and rock.

In 2011, he was invited on as a guest presenter on BBC Radio 6 Music and in 2015 started playing in clubs.

He branched out to DJ in clubs in 2015 and has since had regular slots at London bars and nightclubs.

Glastonbury Festival was his next destination in 2016, playing alongside artist Kavus Torabi.

This collab led to the creation of The Utopia Strong, an electronic music band. they released their first album in 2019 and in March 2023, went on a UK tour, supporting The Steve Hillage Band. Steve plays analogue modular synthesiser.

In July 2023, Steve took to the decks at Wembley Stadium, playing to a vast crowd of 90,000 people.
