Duncan Scott is Scotland’s most decorated Olympian and Great Britain’s most successful Olympic swimmer, as well as the most decorated British athlete at a single Olympic Games.
With two gold and six silver Olympic medals, he has made history in the pool — all while completing a degree in Business and Sports Studies at the University of Stirling, Scotland’s national performance centre for swimming.
Early Career and Rise to Fame
Duncan Scott made his international debut in 2014 at just 16, winning a Commonwealth Games silver medal in the 4x200m Freestyle Relay for Team Scotland in Glasgow.
In 2015, he dominated the European Games with three gold and three silver medals, becoming Great Britain’s most decorated athlete at the event.
Later that year, he claimed gold in the Men’s 4x200m Freestyle Relay at his first World Championships.
Olympic Breakthrough in Rio 2016
Ahead of the Rio 2016 Olympics, Duncan Scott won two gold medals at the European Championships in the men’s and mixed 4x100m Medley Relays.
In Rio, he solidified his place among the world’s elite, earning two silver medals in the Men’s 4x200m Freestyle and 4x100m Medley Relay teams.
He also finished fifth in the 100m Freestyle final, setting a British record (48.01s) and becoming the first British man to reach the freestyle final since 1968.
Continued Success on the World Stage
In 2017, Duncan Scott defended his 4x200m Freestyle Relay World Championship title and added silver in the 4x100m Medley Relay.
At the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, he won six medals (1 gold, 1 silver, 4 bronze), setting a record for the most medals by a Scottish swimmer at a single Games.
He was chosen as Team Scotland’s flag bearer for the closing ceremony.
Later in 2018, he claimed four medals at the European Championships in Glasgow, including three golds (200m Freestyle, 4x200m Freestyle Relay, 4x100m Medley Relay) and one silver in the 100m Freestyle.
2019–2021: Breaking Records and Building Legacy
At the 2019 World Championships in Gwangju, Duncan Scott earned gold in the 4x100m Medley Relay and bronze in the 200m Freestyle, before starring for London Roar in the International Swimming League.
During the pandemic year of 2020, he set multiple British records in the 200m Freestyle and 200m Individual Medley while maintaining elite form.
In 2021, at the British Championships, Duncan broke national records in the 200m IM (1:55.90) and 200m Freestyle (1:44.47).
A month later, he dominated the European Championships with two golds and three silvers, setting the stage for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics (held in 2021).

In 2023, he returned at the World Championships in Fukuoka, securing silver in the 200m IM, plus relay gold and bronze.
Later, at the European Short Course Championships in Bucharest, he won gold in the 200m IM with a new British record (1:50.98), alongside relay gold and silver.
