Before his tenure at Arsenal (starting in 1996), Arsène managed the likes of Strasbourg, and Cannes. He then spent seven years in charge of Monaco, had a season in Japan at Grampus Eight, and then moved to Highbury.

His appointment to Arsenal was not without controversy, with then-Arsenal captain Tony Adams saying, “What does this Frenchman know about football? He wears glasses and looks more like a schoolteacher. He’s not going to be as good as George Graham. The first decade in charge of Arsenal was defined by the fierce rivalry he had with Manchester United as they battled for Premier League dominance. He made history with the team, leading them to an undefeated domestic league season in 2004, followed by 49 consecutive league match wins.
