More About
Arsène Wenger’s career started as a player – a modest career – but it was in management where his start truly ascended. His intellectual approach and journey through European clubs laid the groundwork for a philosophy not seen in English football before. Whilst at Arsenal, he introduced groundbreaking dietary and training regimens, fostering an environment where players thrived both mentally and physically.
Arsène Wenger | Management
Before his tenure at Arsenal (starting in 1996), Arsène managed the likes of Strasbourg, and Cannes. He then spent seven years in charge of Monaco, had a season in Japan at Grampus Eight, and then moved to Highbury.
His appointment to Arsenal was not without controversy, with then-Arsenal captain Tony Adams saying, “What does this Frenchman know about football? He wears glasses and looks more like a schoolteacher. He’s not going to be as good as George Graham. Does he even speak English properly?” The general feeling about him was one of perplexity; whilst he was being touted as the next best thing in football management, he was a relative unknown in the UK.
The first decade in charge of Arsenal was defined by the fierce rivalry he had with Manchester United as they battled for Premier League dominance. It was during this time that the club had the “Invincibles”, a team consisting of the likes of Robert Pires, Patrick Viera, Dennie Bergkamp, and Thierry Henry.
Arsène was the longest-serving manager in English football, and along with Arsenal he went on to win three league titles and seven FA cups, as well as the Premier League. He made history with the team, leading them to an undefeated domestic league season in 2004, followed by 49 consecutive league match wins.
Arsène announced he would leave the club at the end of the 2017-18 season. Upon leaving the club, he left a legacy of professionalism, analytical performance methods, and culture that changed the game for the better. His management record is one that few will ever equal.
