Will Courtenay graduated from Cambridge University with a Master of Engineering degree. Following graduation, he began working as a software programmer in the aerospace, electronics, and automotive industries, before beginning his motorsport career at Jaguar Racing as a systems engineer.
In 2005, he moved to Red Bull Racing and played a key role in managing their strategy, operations, and logistics. He rose through the ranks in the next five years, becoming Head of Strategy in 2010. He was part of the leadership team that contributed to Red Bull’s dominance in Formula One, helping the team secure multiple team and individual titles.
Red Bull won the Constructors Title in all four years of Will’s time as Head of Strategy with Sebastian Vettel. He then added two more titles in 2022 and 2023 with Max Verstappen.
He was announced as McLaren’s new sporting director in 2024 and, after completing 21 seasons with Red Bull, he joined McLaren ahead of the 2026 season.
