Paul Merson

Paul Merson is a former professional footballer, manager, commentator, and sports television pundit for Sky Sports.

An Arsenal legend, he made more than 300 appearances for the Gunners between 1985 and 1997, having come through the youth ranks at Highbury. A key member of the team, he collected a plethora of awards and honours before moving to Middlesbrough in 1997. He would go on to play for Aston Villa and Walsall, before retiring from playing in 2006.

He also played 21 times for England, appearing at the 1992 European Championships and scoring a penalty in the quarter-final shootout defeat to Argentina in 1998.

Since retiring, Paul has been a regular on Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday and has also been a pundit for Premier League games. He writes a weekly column for the Daily Star and has spoken openly about his issues around gambling and mental health.

Paul Merson joined Arsenal in 1985, making over 300 appearances and scoring almost 100 goals in all competitions before moving to Middlesborough for a record £5 million fee. He spent a year at Middlesborough, making 48 appearances, before signing for Aston Villa, where he made 117 appearances and scored 18 goals. He very quickly became a fan favourite due to his creative brand of football, staying with the club for five years, helping them reach the 2000 FA Cup Final. He transferred to Portsmouth in 2002, staying for a year, and then signing with Walsall, making 77 appearances.

The last few years of his club career saw him playing for Tamworth, Welshpool Town, Caerau, and Hanworth Villa.

He made his international debut in 1991 against Germany. During his time with England he would play in the 1992 Euro Championships, 1994 World Cup, and 1998 World Cup. He played a pivotal part in a team that had one of the most successful runs for England in the modern era.

Following a brief spell as manager for Walsall, he began a career in the media, becoming a popular TV pundit, appearing on Sky Sports programmes including Soccer Saturday and Fantasy Football Club. In 2024 he appeared in Strictly Come Dancing alongside Tom Dean and Sam Quek. Partnered with professional dancer Karen Hauer, he was the fourth celebrity to be eliminated. He has also appeared on Celebs on the Farm, Harry’s Heroes: The Full English, and writes a column for the Daily Star’s ‘Seriously Football’ pullout.
