Former Lioness, Liverpool, Everton and Brighton footballer Fern, is now an established pundit for Sky Sports and the BBC. She is also the PFA’s first Women’s Football Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Executive.
Fern has become a regular face on Sky Sports coverage of the WSL, providing in depth analysis both in studio and pitch-side, and turned her hand to commentary with the BBC.
Alongside winning accolades such as FA Young Player of the Year and European Under-19’s Player of the Tournament, she has won the FA Cup, League Cup and competed in the Women’s Champions League.
Off the pitch, she is a qualified physiotherapist and a renowned public speaker, tackling topics about gender equality in elite sport.

Fern Whelan started playing football for her school’s boys’ team, before she was signed up to play for the Liverpool Feds junior side. She then progressed to the Liverpool Ladies senior side and then Everton Ladies. Her club career saw her play in every round of the 2007-08 Women’s Premier League Cup; the 2010 and 2014 FA Women’s Cup Finals; and play for Notts County and Brighton & Hove Albion.
Alongside her club career, Fern also represented England at Under-15, Under-19, Under-20, and Under-23 levels, before playing for the senior squad in 2009. She played for England at the Women’s Euro championships, and was allotted 177 when the FA announced their legacy numbers scheme to honour the 50th anniversary of England’s inaugural international.
Due to injury, she retired from professional football in October 2020. She has become a trusted voice on women’s football, working as a pundit and commentator for the BBC, Channel 4, and Sky Sports.
Since retiring, she has become an executive for equality, diversity, and inclusion in women’s football at the Professional Footballers’ Association.
She is now in demand as a sports speaker, bringing warmth, experience, and credibility, delivering powerful messages that resonate outside of the sport industry.
