Jonathan Edwards was born on 10 May 1966 in Westminster, London, and grew up in Devon, where he first discovered his athletic talent while attending West Buckland School.

He excelled in a range of sports from an early age and showed particular aptitude for jumping events.

After school, he studied physics at Durham University, balancing his academic pursuits with a growing commitment to athletics, laying the foundation for the following record-breaking career.

Jonathan enjoyed an outstanding career in athletics, specialising in the triple jump and setting an unmatched standard.

He captured global attention at the 1995 World Championships in Gothenburg, where he became the first athlete to legally jump over 18 metres, recording a world record of 18.29 metres that still stands today.

Throughout his career, he amassed an impressive collection of medals, including Olympic gold at Sydney 2000, double World Championship titles in 1995 and 2001, and victories at the European and Commonwealth Games.

Jonathan consistently dominated his discipline, blending remarkable technique with explosive power, and was renowned for his ability to perform under pressure on the sport’s biggest stages.

Since retiring from competitive sport in 2003, Jonathan Edwards has built a successful career in broadcasting and media.

He has worked extensively as a commentator and presenter for the BBC, covering major events including the Olympics, World Championships, and the Tour de France.

In 2017, Jonathan joined Eurosport under an exclusive deal, becoming their lead presenter for flagship sports programming, including the Olympics.

Edwards has since been a prominent figure in Eurosport’s coverage of major sporting events, particularly in cycling.

He has hosted live UK coverage of the Giro d’Italia and the Tour de France, providing in-depth analysis and commentary.

He has also contributed to documentaries and sports features, bringing his expertise as a world-class athlete to audiences across television and digital platforms. 

On Channel 4, he presented the morning programme of the London Paralympic Games and hosted the inaugural Invictus Games for the BBC.

Since retiring from competitive athletics, Jonathan has developed a rich portfolio of interests and charitable commitments reflecting his passion for sport and desire to give back.

He has taken up golf and now serves as a global ambassador for the R&A, championing the game worldwide and supporting its growth at all levels.

In addition, Jonathan remains closely involved with The Open Championship, where he contributes by overseeing the iconic manual scoreboards and supporting the walking scorers, ensuring the event runs seamlessly for players and fans alike.

Beyond his sporting engagements, he is deeply committed to charitable work, particularly supporting the Motor Neurone Disease Association.

Through this role, he helps raise awareness and funds for research into this devastating condition, using his profile and influence to make a tangible difference in the lives of those affected.
