Ruud van Nistelrooy is a Dutch former footballer, a legend of the game. He may have retired from professional playing in 2012, but he remains one of the games most revered figures – a lethal striker whose goalscoring exploits for Manchester United and the Netherlands national team, cemented his legacy as one of the game’s great finishers.
Since retiring, Ruud has steadily developed his coaching and management career, progressing through rules within the Dutch system before moving into senior management. When he recently stepped in as interim manager at Manchester United, he led an impressive unbeaten run of three wins and one draw. He is currently part of the coaching setup of the Netherlands national team building for the World Cup.

Ruud van Nistelrooy’s football career started at youth clubs including RKSV Margriet, and Nooit Gedacht. He then moved on to play for clubs including PSV, Heerenveen, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Hamburger SV, and Malaga. During his time at PSV, he helped them to win the Eredivisie twice, and the Johan Cruyff Shield. And with Real Madrid he twice won the La Liga, and won the Supercopa de Espana.
His biggest success came at Manchester United, where he helped them to win the Premier League, the FA Cup, the Football League Cup, and the FA Community Shield. During his time at the club he scored 150 goals in 219 appearances, making him at the time, the club’s all-time European goalscorer.
He earned 70 caps and scored 35 goals for the Netherlands national team, playing in World Cups and EURO Championships. He retired from professional football playing in 2012.

Since retiring from playing football, he has been a prominent manager, firstly as assistant manager for the Netherlands national team, and manager for PSV’s U-19 team, before taking over as head coach of the PSV senior team. His coaching journey even saw him win the KNVB Cup. In mid 2024 he was announced as assistant coach for Manchester United, before being made interim head coach in October 2024. In November 2024 he became the manager of Premier League club Leicester City, a position he kept for a year, before becoming the assistant coach for the Netherlands national team.
