Born in Carmarthen to a former rugby player father, Ken Owens joined Llanelli RFC (known as the Scarlets) to pursue his rugby career as a hooker. He made his debut in 2006, the same year he won two caps for the Wales Under 19s team. He would go on to win caps for the U20, U21, and senior teams.

Over his club career, he played for:

– Scarlets: 270 appearances and 110 points

– Carmarthen Quins: 2 appearances

He made his debut for the senior Welsh international team at the 2011 World Cup in New Zealand; in the same season he would make his Six Nations debut, a tournament that won Wales the Grand Slam. He also played every match of the 2015 World Cup, making it to the quarter finals. In 2023, Warren Gatland made him captain, where he became the principality’s oldest ever captain. Altogether, he made 91 appearances for the senior Welsh international team, scoring 30 points.

In 2017, he was called up to the British and Irish Lions squad, captaining the side in a tour match; he would go on to make five appearances for the team.

He officially announced his retirement in 2024 due to a worsening of back and neck injuries.
