Lee Byrne

Lee Byrne was one of the most exciting Welsh rugby players of his generation, best known for being part of the “Fab Four”.

He made his debut for Wales in 2006, and his performances helped his nation to win the 2008 Six Nations Grand Slam. His talent was clear to see across Six Nations championships, the autumn internationals, and the British & Irish Lions squad. Overall, he played 46 times for his country, with a total of 55 points.

In 2017 he released his autobiography The Byrne Identity.

His experience on some of sporting’s biggest stages has made Lee a much sought-after corporate speaker.

Lee Byrne| Club Career

Lee Byrne started his rugby career by playing for Bridgend Athletic RFC, and Tondu RFC, as a wing or a full-back. He was spotted playing and was signed for the senior team Llanelli Scarlets, scoring 15 tries in 70 games, where he contributed to the team’s 2004 Celtic League win.

In 2007, he signed to Ospreys, where he made the most impact out of any of his signings. In the four years he spent there, he played in 92 games and scored an impressive 29 tries. Over his time there, the club won the 2007 and 2010 Magners League, were runners-up at the EDGF Cup 2007, winning it the following year.

After this he moved to French club ASM Clermont Auvergne; here he played 69 games and scored 18 tries. As a team, they were the Top 14 French League semi-finalists in the 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 seasons. They were also the semi-finalists at the 2011-2012 Heineken Cup, a title they won in the following season. He then spent a year at Newport Gwent Dragons, before announcing his retirement in April 2015.

 

Lee Byrne| International Career

Lee made his debut for Wales in the 2005-06 season, against New Zealand. Over an eight-year career, he scored 11 tries in 46 games, was part of the 2011 World Cup squad, the 2007-2011 Six Nations Squads, and the 2006-2010 autumn international squads. He was part of the team that won the Six Nations grand slam and triple crown in 2008. In 2009 he was named in the British & Irish Lions team, playing just the one game with them.

 

Lee Byrne| Retirement

Since retiring from professional rugby, he has had a range of jobs, including Project Development Director for Dribuild, and Sales Director for Bridgeport360. In 2020 he co-founded FabFour Coffee, a coffee brand launched by the members of the rugby ‘fab four’ Shane Williams, Mike Phillips, and James Hook.

He is currently a Director of Business Development for TPS360, and PROJECT SOLUTIONS.

Since his retirement, Lee has made a name for himself as a pundit and commentator for ITV Wales, BBC Sport, and Sky Sports, as well as a motivational and inspirational sporting speaker.

He is involved in a range of charities, including Tomorrows Generation, aiming to fundraise for specialist teaching for dyslexic children in Cardiff, and State of Mind, which aims to improve mental health amongst rugby league players and communities. He is also an Ambassador for the British Dyslexia Association. He has spoken publicly many times about his dyslexia, and how it caused him some setbacks during his school years and his professional rugby career.
